Hold your friends close: Countering radicalisation in Britain and America

The result of a PhD at the Coral Bell School, this book identifies counterradicalisation measures as novel and as concerned with integration and persuasion rather than coercion, in contrast to traditional counterterrorism measures, and asks why such measures exist. The book builds on a small but growing body of work in constructivist counterterrorism studies. It argues that counterradicalisation is not the result of a rational response to material threat but is rather driven by historically informed, ‘taken for granted’ ideas about political community held by policy actors. Here, homegrown extremism is conceived of as a threat to the congruence of formal and informal political community rather than simply as a material threat.
