In this public lecture the current Global Deputy Director of IRC's violence prevention and response program will reflect on the various approaches and challenges of protection work in displacement contexts.

Anthony Nolan is the global Deputy Director (Violence Prevention and Response) for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), one of the world's largest international NGOs. 

He has 20 years of experience designing, implementing and monitoring justice, social welfare and violence prevention policy and service delivery initiatives. Prior to joining the IRC, Anthony led the design and roll out of a new protection from violence sector for the Norwegian Refugee Council's (one of the largest displacement focused international NGO, working in over 30 countries). 

He has led a range of protection portfolios for UNICEF, including national juvenile justice reforms in Papua New Guinea, constitutional reform and the national scale up of specialised services for survivors of sexual violence in Zimbabwe; and emergency child protection services in South Sudan, and served as Chief of Child Protection in South Africa. 

He has a deep understanding of the humanitarian coordination architecture and has contributed to the shift towards more local actor engagement in situations of mass internal displacement and conflict. He recently co-chaired the Global Protection Cluster Strategic Advisory Group, is a former Global Education Cluster Coordinator and Advisor with the Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility. 

Anthony has also worked in the statutory child protection and disability sectors in his home country, Australia. His academic training is in Psychology, holds a Master’s in Human Services and is an accredited safeguarding investigator. 

He has co-authored several journal articles related to protection, including in Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Indicators Research and the Forced Migration Review. He has lived and worked in the Pacific, Southern and Eastern Africa, Australia and is currently living in Switzerland.
